I'm tired...

...of blogging. Well, tired of writing in general. I've been having a hard time stringing words together for the last month or so. I mean, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so it always takes me a while to write something substantial, but this is ridiculous. I'm not usually one to turn in assignments late, but it's happened twice so far this summer - I just can't seem to get it together.

What I'm saying is this: it's summer vacation. And I'm taking a break from writing anything that I don't have to write. Maybe I'll pick it back up in a couple of months...

always writing... even when I'm not

I spent this week at the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with my mom, her sister and two of my cousins. It was fabulous, even though I'm not really a beach person - I'd rather wear baggy sweatshirts than skin-tight swimsuits any day! But one day I'll be old and crony enough for those extremely tacky mu-mus to be acceptable, and then it'll be "look out, beach, here I come." ... Naw, that's probably not true - I'm really more fond of mountains and the smell of the forest. So transplant that old, crony lady (in an outdoors-y equivalent to the mu-mu) to the Cohutta Wilderness, and you've about got it. A gratuitious preview of my elderly years - don't you feel privileged?

Anyway, the beach gave me plenty of time to read things that I'd like to read (top on my list was Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott - mmm, literary chocolate) and to otherwise spend time attending to my own random musings. I've noticed lately how often I find myself narrating what's happening in my world. The scenery doesn't matter - it could be a spectacular sunrise or just some buzzy bug flying from flower to flower. I find myself trying to come up with the best way to describe that moment, crashing words and images together like a toddler with a bunch of Hotwheels. I sometimes create characters out of bits and pieces of the beloved personalities around me. (But usually I stick to "non-fiction friends" - real people are so much more dynamic and colorful than any character I could come up with!) It occurs to me that this may not be a normal preoccupation. (Can we still be friends?) But then again, I'm always discovering that I'm not nearly as unique as I often dupe myself into believing, so perhaps I'm not alone!

And then, here's the other thing that I've noticed: all this mental writing remains pretty self-centered. (I mean, just look at all of the 1st person pronouns in this post alone!) Most of the time I'm content to amuse myself with my cleverness, and then saunter away feeling all enlightened and insightful, not to mention rather hilarious. (Ew, admitting that makes me feel so icky. As if y'all haven't already deduced that I have this problem. Well, it's true, so what can I do?!) All that to say that, as much as I like to daydream about writing something worthwhile and memorable someday, I think I'll have to wait until I've gotten over myself a little more. Okay, a lot more. Fortunately, Jesus isn't done with me yet - that day might actually come!

In the meantime, I owe a big thanks to all those colorful, dynamic characters who have been patient enough to read my self-centered drivel. So... thanks!

The Lost Posts

It's funny how many posts I get halfway through writing before I decide they're rubbish and delete them. So far I have no regrets. Some things sound much better played on repeat in my mind than they do in words on my computer screen. For instance, the remainder of this post just didn't make the cut. It's not ready for words yet, I guess.

Kickin' things off...

I feel like I should jump start my blog with some deeply insightful thought. After all, beginnings are important, right? Unfortunately, nothing brilliant comes to mind at the moment, so I might as well get on with the ramblings that will most likely take over eventually anyway!

I've been toying with the idea of starting a blog for a long time, mostly just as a creative outlet. I've always enjoyed writing, and there's something oddly satisfying about the tap tap tap of fingertips dancing across computer keys. (But maybe it's just me...) My primary reason for experimenting with a blog is that I think it will be a handy way for my loved ones to keep up with me. After my (long) higher education journey comes to a close, I hope to do mission work, and a blog might be a great way to share my daily experiences, especially ones I'd forget to share, with those back at home who support me.

Currently, I'm in the middle of a two week respite between school and a summer youth internship. Almost every time I have a decent-sized break from school, I head home to Georgia to spend a little time with my family. Right now I'm slapping away at the keyboard in my parents' kitchen - I tend to choose work spaces in the middle of all the action so I won't miss anything. Just a quirky tendency of mine (one of many!).

I'm glad to have a little transition time between my full-time student life and my summer faith adventure with the youth of Belton. It's helping me reorient myself and set my mind on Christ and the task before me. By the time my flight for DFW leaves on Saturday, I think I'll be ready to energetically tackle the summer. In the meantime, I'm doing a little fun reading, taking long walks in my favorite park, relishing the honey-suckle scented air of late spring, and otherwise recooperating from a strenuous semester. I'm excited to see where this summer will lead me.
